Fireman’s Prayer: The Willing and The Brave

Fireman’s Prayer: The Willing and The Brave

“Greater love hath no man than this,
That a man lay down his life for his friends.”
-John 15:13

If one has never had the unfortunate opportunity to need emergency response teams, then there is no real understanding of the sacrifice offered for strangers. For many individuals that find themselves in this situation, it is considered to be one of the worst days of their lives. In the middle of the storm, a outstretched hand is the difference between dying and living. The Fireman’s Prayer is one of strength, endurance, safety, and courage.

Every individual is called to contribute to the world around them. Typically, individuals focus on charitable giving to meet their “good Samaritan” quota. A rare few percent of individuals respond to the call that places extreme danger to their personal self. These individuals need to be steadfastly in the entire communities prayers. Self-sacrifice is by and large unheard of today. If an individual has never experienced a person placing themselves in danger in order to assure their safety it’s incredibly hard to comprehend.

Quite often, these individuals are taken for granted. When the sirens sound off, and the large trucks are pulled out of their garage, the first thought is typically a pondering of what is wrong. The hurt individuals of course need to be in the immediate prayers lifted to God, but far too often the responders are taken for granted. The Fireman’s Prayer must include the fortitude to continue. One major crises in anyone’s’ life is considered enough. These individuals place their lives in danger as often as the calls come.

It takes tremendous courage to walk into any given situation and not fully understand the depth of danger. One can’t help but think of the Firemen that first responded to the Twin Towers on 9/11. So many of our nation’s best citizens grabbed their hats and rushed to save as many lives as they possibly could. The full understanding of the crises far from known. Even after the first Tower fell, yet so many more rushed in with the specific effort to save lives. It just wasn’t in them to run away. Our country lost so many valued individuals that horrible day. The individuals that perished, merely for being in the building, and the brave individuals that sought to rescue them.

These Firemen and women that perished are not that different from every first responder found in every small corner of our nation. This personal character of honor and courage, along with self-sacrifice are traits found in virtually every single first responder in our great nation. The Fireman’s prayer is such an honored one. It is for individuals that put their lives in danger for lives of strangers.

Another man in history came to put his life in harm’s way to save the lives of others. He was arrested, for no reason other than being disliked. He was beaten and flogged, just for entertainment value. Not once did he open his mouth to protest or put up a fight. He was forced to carry his own cross…the very object that he would be nailed upon. Crowds screamed and mocked him as he willed his body to bear the weight of the cross. One by one the nails were pounded into place, and the cross was hoisted up into the air.

This man is named Jesus. There is more historical proof of him than that of Alexander the Great. This man came, to suffer and die, for each individual person created by God. He suffered a horrific death, for no other reason than to save the eternal lives of any person that will whisper his name as Savior. Self-sacrifice is a quality that few obtain. The willingness to lay down their life for the safety of another person is true selflessness.

The Fireman’s Prayer is often whispered in passionate tones by family members themselves. Every time the news shows a fire, their heart stops and fear takes hold. So many more in our community need to honor these individuals and offer a Fireman’s Prayer. These individuals perform their tasks willingly, taking much pride in what good they could contribute. These are some of the best individuals our country has to offer. Undoubtedly, the willingness to lay down your life for another individual is the highest form of compassion that can ever be shown.
