Prayer for Faith: The Desperate Cry of the Weary

Prayer for Faith: The Desperate Cry of the Weary

“Faith is daring the soul to go beyond what the eyes can see.”
-William Newton Clark

The days are merely bearable. The demands from work, family, and life tug and pull in various directions. The hectic day unfolds without the need to focus on breathing. Task after task is completed and suddenly the stillness of the night beckons. Moments pass in slow motion, and each breath seems forced and labored. In the dark of endless hours, fears and burdens become unbearable. The weight of the unknown can cause our souls to splinter and fragment. Faith is an easy concept to grasp when all is well and life is as it should be. Faith is difficult when it’s all one has. A prayer for faith is one of the most important prayers along the Christian walk.

The burdens of the average person today may differ greatly from the burdens during the time of Jesus, but the feelings of pain and suffering have not. Jesus understands fear, anxiety, and sorrow. No matter where you find yourself, God is mighty enough to bridge the gap between courage and knowledge. This gap is home of faith. Jesus had an overwhelming desire to reach those that felt hopeless. He is the hope of the forgotten, invisible, or out casted. The King of all Kings did not gather around the affluent of society. He went to the darkest corners of each city to heal the wounds of individuals that many wouldn’t give a second thought to.

The Apostle Matthew shares a moving passage where Jesus is explaining to individuals that feel invisible that God sees them. He states, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep Company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly” (Message Version).

Regardless of where an individual is in life, the strength to rise above and change the circumstances are extended with an open hand from Jesus. This is the key of Christianity. Jesus offers Salvation, but also so much more! Jesus repeatedly explained that God wishes to be completely invested in each individual’s life if there is enough faith to merely grasp his hand. A prayer for faith is not the prayer of a weak person. A prayer for faith is what makes God’s heart sing. These prayers are coming from a child that is choosing to grasp the outstretched hand of a Father.

In the New Testament there is a story of a woman that suffered from years of menstrual bleeding. Under Jewish customs this would have labeled the woman as “unclean” and caused her to become an outcast in society. Scripture details that many physicians had been sought in trying to cure her medical condition. Renewed hope had repeatedly been deflated after years of rejection. Imagine the day of discovery upon hearing that the Son of God was walking the streets of town. The incredible amount of faith and determination it would have taken to face the crowds and force her way to the side of Jesus. After years of rejection by peers it would have taken incredible courage to enter the crowd and force her way to Christ’s side.

As the story unfolds, it tells that she worked her way to his side and merely touched the fringes of his robe. Jesus immediately stopped and stated; “who touched me?” When the disciples looked confused he explained that he had felt power drain from him. What an example of the power of faith. The Divineness of Christ responded directly to the level of faith that this heartbroken woman possessed. When she confessed that it was her, Jesus very tenderly said “daughter, your faith has made you well.”

A prayer for faith is how people today can reach out to touch the fringes of Christ’s robe. The simple act demonstrates grasping the outstretched hand and life can be changed forever. The situation may not change immediately, for God moves in a space of time that differs from human understanding. Do not mistaken silence for rejection. Once a prayer for faith is met by God’s ear the work has begun. It might not be the answers we expect, but God will never ignore the prayers of any individual seeking his will.

In a society where there is much emphasis placed on self dependence, faith is a hard concept for many to understand. Only when we let go and fully place our trust in God can the circumstances around us begin to change. At times, the hardest effort is to reach out and touch the fringes of Christ’s robe by offering a prayer for faith.
