During life there are moments that time seems to race by, leaving fleeting images of changing seasons and scattered memories. Then, without understanding, time seems to stand still. During these moments, each heartbreaking detail becomes etched into our souls. Most of life is lived in the dark, never knowing what lingers around the corner. It is an endless journey of extreme heights that can stumble to immeasurable valleys. Mountains can move through the power of prayer, and valleys can melt away. God is a mighty God that wants to personally become involved in our lives. Many individuals simply do not understand the power of a quietly whispered prayer for friends. Walking this journey, hand in hand, in the dark with a friend that petitions God on your behalf is life altering.

If merely understanding the concept of a friend from the world view, it would be difficult to understand choosing to walk in the dark with them over struggling alone in the light. In society today there seems to be a culture of disconnection. In an environment where over 50% of marriages end in divorce, it appears that friendships has become trivial. Relationships are disregarded at an alarming rate, which has become socially acceptable by world values.

Jesus drastically changed forever the definition of friendship. No longer would the worlds view be the set standard. When taking into account the documented prayers of Christ throughout the Gospels, only once was there a reference of Jesus praying for himself. While in the garden, he humbly whispered “take this cup from me”. All other references of specific prayers made by Jesus where that for other people, or in other words, a prayer for friends.
Without a doubt, Paul is accredited for being one of the most powerful deep thinkers of the early Christian movement. In a letter to the Ephesians, he clearly demonstrates the importance of prayer for friends. He eloquently states, “I couldn’t stop thanking God for you-every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give thanks. But I do more than thank. I ask-ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory-to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do…” (Message Version).

Scripture reveals continually throughout the Old and New Testaments that God bends his ear to prayers. Prayer is when the infinite and finite realms collide. When the Creator is approachable by the creation. There is truly nothing more moving than the passionate pleas of a friend petitioning God on the behalf of another person. The true selfless act alone is the representation that Christ dwells within.

During the darkest moments of life there are absolutely no words that can offer comfort for some situations. At these times, is when the most powerful contribution a friend can do is lifting up the situation in prayer. A Prayer for friends is powerful in the way that sometimes only another person can utter words that seem to never form. When the pain is so deep, and the soul is too weary to breathe, a friend can break the silence.

Martin Luther King Jr. once stated that “in the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” A close friend knows the heart, the situation, or the struggle. Using Jesus as an example for friendship, it goes without saying that God does not wish for friends to be remembered for silence. Jesus proved through the example of himself and his early followers that God heeds a prayer for friends. For a brief time; the world stops spinning and time is frozen. In these moments painful burdens are offered not only the God of all creation, but to a personal God that feels each and every ache of the soul. Desperate words are graciously ushered to God’s ear, from a dedicated friend that is whispering a prayer for friends.
